First Lutheran was founded in the fall of 1895 as a congregation to serve the Scandinavian immigrants who had settled in the Montclair area. It's roots were in the Augustana Synod of the Lutheran Church and later, in the Lutheran Church of America. After outgrowing its first sanctuary on Glen Ridge Avenue, the present sanctuary was dedicated in 1961. An office and educational wing was completed in 1990, which included an elevator for total accessibility. We remain an active, vital community of Work and Sacrament ministry, with an emphasis on witnessing and serving the less fortunate.
